This article is a detailed study on the contemporary art scene in China in the early 1990s, with conversations with some of the leading experimental artists living in Beijing and the curator Li Xianting. A brief history of the development of art in China from the late 1970s to early 1990s is provided, with mention of the Yuanmingyuan artist village. The influence and impact of exhibitions of Western art, such as those featuring Robert Rauschenberg and Gilbert and George in 1993, are discussed.
