As the title suggests, this catalogue presents three installations by Xu Bing: 1) ‘Five Series of Repetitions’, his MFA graduation piece, in which he explored the process of printmaking; 2) ‘A Book from the Sky’, in which Xu displayed thousands of new characters he invented. This installation was first exhibited in Beijing in October 1988 and had a profound impact on the Chinese art world. 3) In ‘Ghosts Pounding the Wall’, Xu Bing continues his questioning of cultural values and the validity of human endeavor through an installation comprising rubbings of a section of the Great Wall and one of its towers. A biography of the artist is included in this catalogue.
