Catalogue of solo exhibition by Toko Shinoda at Shinsei Bank Head Office in 2005. The exhibition features not only 36 recent paintings, but also 24 lithographic works created after 1979.

'Like prophets in their own land, it was usual for contemporary Japanese artists to be feted more abroad than at home. But the career of Toko Shinoda, one of the most important of post-war contemporary artists, has refused to conform to this stereotype and her work has achieved simultaneous recognition both abroad and in Japan. For over six decades she has refined a way of working that, to the outsider, appears to be quintessentially Japanese in its respect for materials and tradition yet from the perspective of traditional Japanese art it is clear that she has at least challenged, if not openly flouted, many of its fundamental precepts. - extracted from article by David Elliott.
