Conceived in 1993, Forest of Stone Steles, Retranslation & Rewriting of Tang Poetry is a large scale installation by Gu Wenda. The work takes both Chinese-English and English-Chinese translations of fifty Tang poems as its subject, and through imprecise translations and retranslations of the language, Gu Wenda demonstrates the un-translatability of language across cultures. This points to the many puzzles and problems that have arisen out of the globalization of contemporary human cultures.

Since its completion, the Forest of Stone Steles has been exhibited in a handful of locations in Australia, America and Hong Kong. This exhibition at OCT Contemporary Art Terminal is the first to display the entire series of works. The exhibition takes the theme of 'Cultural Translation' as its subject, and intends to explore the cultural meaning of this monumental works.

Essays authored by many well-known Chinese and foreign scholars are collected in this publication. Also included in the book are documentations of the process of making Forest of Stone Steles, texts from the steles and Gu's script.
