'Travelers Between Cultures showcases some of the cross-cultural issues addressed in the art work of five Chinese-born, New York-based artists - Xu Bing, Gu Wenda, Zhang Hongtu, Lin Yan and Lin Yilin. They represent three generations of artists who moved from China during the past twenty-five years, with New York City as the most popular destination for many displaced Chinese artists. Like most of their contemporaries of the Chinese diaspora, they have tried to maintain a balance between East and West - memory of the communist past and reality of the capitalist present, the traditional and the modern, and cultural understanding and parochialism.' - extracted from essay by Qian Zhijian.
