This is the catalogue of Xiao Fan’s exhibition at the Galerie de Hesdin, Paris in 1992. After a trip to Arezzo and Siena in Italy, Xiao Fan became attracted to the compositions of Piero della Francesca and Lorenzetti. In his works, however, he replaced the heads and faces of his figures with balloons, employed by the artist not as a playful symbol but as a passage from matter into an ethereal entity. Balloons climb in the air and travel to other territories; they imply imaginations and fantasies. The introduction of balloons and angels in his works, no matter whether they are paintings or sculptures, allowed Xiao Fan to concentrate on the relationships of bodies in space. This catalogue features an essay on Xiao Fan’s works and a brief biography of his artistic activities.
