Taiwan artist Hsia Yan was born in China in 1932. He moved to Taiwan with Guomintang soldiers when he was 17. There, he joined Li Chungshen's art studio and was deeply influenced by the ideas of Western modern art. Hsia became one of the avant-garde artists in Taiwan who advocated modern art in the early 1960s. Hsia went to Europe in 1963, stayed in Paris for 5 years, and later moved to New York. He returned to Taiwan in 1992 for good.
The present catalogue was published on the occasion of Hsia Yan's solo exhibition at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. The paintings included here offer a retrospective study of the artist's development in the period of four decades, from 1954 to 1994. A selected bibliography and an illustrated biography (with photograph clippings) are provided in the back.
