'Many modern Chinese artists have sought to bring new life into their art, not by reaching out to the West, but by digging deep into the roots of their own tradition. It is natural that the senior art of calligraphy should lead the way, and that the ancient script should provide an endless source of inspiration for them. Yanping was one of the first to explore the subtle interplay between the archaic pictography and the painted image, finding ways of accenting the meaning of the character by the pictorical form she gives it, thus creating works that be both read as text and enjoyed as pictures.' - Michael Sullivan. The present monograph features works by Yang Yanping produced between 1963 and 2003. With artist biography, and short texts by critics and scholars such as James Cahill, Yu Feng, and Robert C. Morgan.
