This is a special issue on contemporary Taiwan art.
"... Still, it cannot be denied that since the division of China between the People's Republic and the Republic of China, Taiwan's cultural landscape has undergone a serious dramatic changes that have affected the sense of selfhood of the whole Taiwanese society. For the serious artist, unlike the mass media entertainer, the abiding problem is how to express in artitstic terms the matter of a Taiwanese identity with which one dares not to associate or mention. Taiwan apart from China is not real and yet Taiwan itself is real. Under such a paradoxical situation, in what ways do or can Taiwanese artists represent themselves through art?"
