“Zhang Hongtu, an On-going Painting Project” documents the series of paintings in which Zhang Hongtu readdresses the famous Chinese compositions of Shan-Shui paintings. In this series of works Zhang Hongtu has applied the painterly technique of a well-known Impressionist or Post-Impressionist, including Monet, Cezanne and van Gogh to the works of Fan Kuan, Dong Yuan, Shen Zhou, Shitao, Wang Shen, Guo Xi, Dong Qichang, Zhao Mengfu, Mi Youren, Wang Hui, Wen Zhengming, Ni Zan and Wang Jian. A contribution by Jerome Silbergeld entitled “Zhang Hongtu’s alternative History of Painting” gives a brief biography and discusses the impact of these new, yet doubly familiar east-west paintings.
