The catalogue is published on the occasion of the exhibition of videos documenting Zhan Huan's performance peices in Beijing, Tokyo and New York. According to the curator Richard Dale, 'Zhang's work addresses trauma - the legacy of great shock or suffering, intense physical or emotional pain. For Zhang, this trauma can be individual (ontogenetic) - concerning his personal and family history - and collective (phylogenetic) - concerning Chinese society's emergence from the brutality of the Cultural Revolution, from famine and political repression.'
The catalogue includes curator's note, and descriptions of each perfomance piece by the artist himself.
