This Critical Reader is a core component of Artspace's commitment to developing critical and social contexts for contemporary art. It is the fifth in a series of such publications first initiated by former Artspace Executive Director Nicholas Tsoutas in response to the 1998 Biennale of Sydney. Australian and overseas critics, curators, academics and artists have contributed hastily written, fluidly discursive responses to the biennale, submitted within a week of the opening.
