Thailand Is Not My Idea
Thasnai Sethaseree is an emerging Thai artists who actively involves with community art oriented projects both in Chicago and Chiangmai. He is well known for his debut, a thesis project at the Master of Art Degree project at the University of Chicago, entitled Temple which engaged in social context, by re-constructing the ambient of temple fair in Thailand in South Side of Chicago. He is interested in sub-cultures and the idea of immigration as well as the transformation of cultural contexts.
He spoke about his idea behind the show, "Recently I have become interested in the idea about national narrative making and its historical process. Needless to say that this process has created a mosaic reality of the concept of nationess. However, I think that in each fragment of the broken reality we will be able to find many interesting stories of people, situations, and their social discourses. And these stories are real as well as they are suspicious. Conceptually, they are beautifully narrated and constructed by all of us. Yes! All of us, everyone on this planet. And at the interstice of this mosaic reality we can write an alternative version of new history, which is not for any country in particular, and it is not the world history as well. But it is a historical atmospherical mode of expressive struggling practically and conceptually for an invisible nation, which is not claimed over or named yet by anyone. However, we will call it Rambutant Society for a moment."
