A Bird

One of the works by Mai Chi Thanh presented at the exhibition 'Composition: Movement and Immobility'.

‘Composition: Movement and Immobility’ was the first exhibition organised by Salon Natasha outside of its own walls. The group exhibition, curated by Natasha Kraevskaia with the assistance of Eric Leroux, took place in May 1995 at the French Cultural Centre (Le Centre Culturel Francais; it was later renamed as Alliance Francais) in Hanoi. Its concept came from the formal characteristic of paintings, namely the compositions. The exhibition attempted to explore the capacity of compositions to reflect movement or, on the contrary, to stay immobile. It was believed that the approach would reveal the relationship or the ‘hidden links’ between the compositional features and the subject matter of the works.
Before the exhibition opening, two controversial works by Truong Tan had been withdrawn from the show by the official cultural authorities. Another two works by Truong from Salon Natasha had been chosen by the committee for replacement.

Participating artists of this exhibition include: Tran Thieu Quang, Le Hong Thai, Le Tuan Anh, Do Minh Tam, Truong Tan, Eric Leroux, Mai Chi Thanh, Bui Viet Dung and Vu Dan Tan.  The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue, which was sponsored by the French Cultural Centre and the French Embassy in Vietnam.
