Chen’s characters, young ladies in pink with blue eyes and a soft skin depicted on a black-tiled bathroom backdrop, resemble robots or celluloid dolls. They can be read as reflections of the culture among the Chinese youth who are fed on electronics, computers, trendy accessories, pop music and Japanese Manga. The artist seems to enjoy lingering on describing this youth fairytale atmosphere, but his paintings question the desire of man to control it by artificial means, through colourful cosmetics and drugs. A biography of the artist is included.
