This is the catalogue for the exhibition ‘China Art Now!’ held at the Singapore Art Museum in 2001. As one of the contributors writes, ‘The works showcased in this exhibition are the visual translations of events and experiences living in the period of contemporary China. It is a portal in history epitomized by the swift and unpredictable. For all the vast transformations and modernization that China has undergone and is continuing to undergo, the commonality that remains a constant is human fragility. It is this complex myriad assimilating human emotion and human spirit within a sweeping vortex of socio-economic change that will continue to pique the interest of the viewers of contemporary Chinese art, its advocators, practitioners and even detractors.’ Brief descriptions of the exhibits, written by either the artists or art critics are also included.
