This catalogue is published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Post-War Japan as Inscribed by the Printmaker's Knife—Two Movements in Popular Woodcut'.

'The exhibition introduces two popular woodcut movements which developed in post-war Japan. One of these was the "Post-War Woodcut Movement" (1947-late 1950s), which communicated social movements through woodcuts, and spread woodcuts to amateurs. The other, which derived from the Post-War Woodcut Movement, was the "Printmaking Education Movement" (1951-late 1990s). In this movement, elementary and junior high school teachers across Japan spread printmaking within school education. Through the influence of these cultural movements, many children in Japan came to make prints at school.' —from the preface by Okubo Jun'ichi.
